Student Guidelines for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools

1.0 INTRODUCTION: ChatGPT and other Generative AI tools can aid your studies but should not be used to complete assignments unless expressly permitted. Over- reliance on AI could influence your learning, coursework assessment and examination performance. Inappropriate use of AI tools can result in the offence of academic dishonesty.

1.1 Do not use Generative AI tools if prohibited for that course, learning activity, assignment or assessment.
1.2 Ensure you find out whether the course or learning activity or assignment or assessment allows the use of AI or not.
1.3 If AI use is prohibited by the lecturer, supervisor or other authorized officer, such use will attract penalties.
1.4 If the use of AI is permitted in your course or particular course activity, always acknowledge the use of AI, for example by referencing or submitting the AI-generated output, or as instructed by your lecturer/supervisor.

2.0 POSITIVE USE OF AI: Regardless of specific course regulations you may use an AI tool as a learning assistant when such use has no impact on academic integrity. Examples of such use may include:

2.1 Co-creative buddy: to partly generate generalized plans or outlines for certain wide assignments or projects.
2.2 Study buddy: to create study guides, schedules; to test your knowledge of a topic; to create questions for self-testing; to explain concepts; to evaluate your explanations.
2.3 Feedback buddy: to get feedback on your thinking; as a tutor to check your understanding.

3.0 CAUTION: Even in cases of authorized use of AI, responsible use is required in the following and other cases not expressly stated here.

3.1 Using AI for general editing and formatting may be acceptable but it could increase likelihood of AI detection on Turnitin or other detection tools. Such detection may be treated as evidence of unauthorized use unless and until you prove otherwise.
3.2 Always save a copy of your prompts and the AI output/responses in case you need to refer back or your lecturer requires to see it.
3.3 Conduct a critical check for facts and sources before trusting or submitting work after using AI tools.
3.4 Ensure you are thoroughly familiar with and personally understand the content of any AI-generated work before submission.
3.5 Protect personal information and respect data privacy whenever you use AI tools. If unsure what data can/cannot used with a particular tool, check with your lecturer/supervisor.
